Short answers to common questions. OSINT is a way of asking and checking, not a promise of secret access or certain answers.
Eight common questions
Is OSINT legal?
Legality depends on the methods, material, purpose, and jurisdiction. Public access is not blanket permission to collect or publish. Follow applicable law and source terms; seek qualified advice for sensitive work. See our ethical principles.
Is it always free?
No. Publicly available sources may involve fees or registration. Start with institutional resources, but check each product's access conditions rather than assuming everything is free or openly licensed.
Do I need specialist tools?
Not to begin. A browser, careful notes, and a spreadsheet can support a simple public-data question. Learn the research process before adding tools.
Are official sources always correct?
No. They establish an institutional origin, not infallibility. Read definitions, methods, revisions, and coverage. Check the claim, not just the publisher's reputation.
Can I republish anything I can read?
No. Copyright, privacy, license terms, and other rights can apply. Distinguish access from reuse in our open knowledge guide.
Can an AI assistant verify facts for me?
It can help organize questions or explain terms, but may invent citations or misread evidence. Follow links, read original sources, and check every consequential claim. Two AI answers are not independent corroboration.
Does OSINT mean investigating people?
No. Public statistics, environmental information, and institutional documents are also open sources. This site focuses on low-risk, public-interest education, not personal tracking or exposing private details.
Is Universal OSINT an official organization?
It is an independent, nonprofit educational initiative, not a public authority or intelligence agency. "Nonprofit" describes our noncommercial purpose, not a claim of registered charity status. Read about the initiative.
